Stiff competition for the Belgians 24-01-2005
The plans are set for the Flanders Indoor Championships. Top Belgian athletes will be aiming to achieve the minimum number of entries to qualify for the European Championships in Madrid.

The Flanders Indoor meeting of 6 February in the Topsporthal Vlaanderen in Ghent promises to be yet another very exciting event. At the press conference that was held on Wednesday in the offices of the KBC, Christoph Impens and Wilfried Meert were not yet able to release the full list of international stars, but it was very clear that the focus will also be on the top Belgian athletes. Our top players will be aiming in fact to achieve the minimum number of entries in order to qualify for the European Championships in Madrid.

Number one crowd puller of course is Kim Gevaert. This Sports Personality of the year 2004 and outgoing European 60-metres indoor champion will be competing in her favourite event against athletes such as the French Sylviane Felix, Vida Anim from Ghana, The British girls Maduaka and Kwayke and the Finnish Manninen.

Veerle Dejaeghere will be competing in the 3,000 metres against the Polish Chojecka, the Spanish Fuentes-Pila and the Portuguese girls Saceamento and Bastos. Tia Hellebaut will be competing in the high jump against the Spanish duo Mendia and Beita, Jones from Britain, the German Herrmann and the Jamaican Beautle.

In the men's events, all eyes will of course be on Joeri Jansen, who will be making his debut in the 1,500 metres. With competitors such as Parra, Redolat and Fernandez from Spain, Kipchirchir and Yiampoy from Kenya and Stouti from Morocco, Jansen will have his hands more than full.

Heavily subscribed events are the men's 60 metres with athletes such as the Nigerian Aliu, the Cuban Mayola, The British Lewis-Francis and Lambert, the French Pognon and Nkansah from Ghana, plus the 800 metres where we will see the Kenyan Mutua, the Dutch athletes Som and Okken, Reina, Quesada and Olmedo from Spain all competing against top Belgian athletes led by Tom Omey.

Other men's events on the programme are a 200 metres event, a 3,000 metres and triple jump. For women there is also an 800 metres event with Sandra Stals among others.
