Maria Mutola
The year of all records: nine stadium records and several national records were broken and history was written. For the first time in athletic history, 2 classic distance world records were broken in the same meeting.

Maria Mutola ran a superb 1.56.45, Haile Gebreselassie a great 7.26.02. Wilson Kipleter finally lowered the 800 m stadium record to1.42.20 and El Guerrouj did the same over 1500 m :3.28.92.

In the 100 m, won by Frankie Fredericks in 9.90, three men bettered the 10 second barrier. Marion Jones was inspired during her first appearance in Brussels: 10.76, with three women under 11 seconds.

Sergey Bubka
produced an impressive comeback with 5m95.

But the meeting was dominated by two great Kenyan runners who created momentous new world records. Daniel Komen ran the 5.000 m in 12.39.74 reducing the old mark by two seconds, and Paul Tergat clocked an incredible time of 26.27.85, becoming the first athlete to run the 10.000 m sub 26.30.
