Daja Bedanova got suprisingly eliminated by Maja Matevzic in the tournament's opening round. In her second-round match, Matevzic will face Venus Williams. Tina Pisnik and Myriam Casanova also got to the second round

Daja Bedanova was considered to be the favourite in her match against Maja Matevzic
as she was one of the quarterfinalists here in Antwerp last year. But Bedanova could never live up to the expectations. It was Matevicz who blitzed Bedanova in two short sets. In her second-round match, Matevzic will face none other than Venus Williams, which is a first for the Slovenian.
In other first-round play Tina Pisnik and Rita Grande performed a fascinating game. Pisnik easily won the first set, but Grande recovered in the second set. In! a tense third set with long rallies, the Slovenian made slightly less errors which lead to her victory.
Kirsten Flipkens couldn't pull a stunt on her WTA-debut against Myriam Casanova. The Swiss player's routine and power lead to a 6-3, 7-5 victory. In her second-round match, Casanova encounters Kim Clijsters

| Which qualifiers proceed to the tournament's main draw? 10/02/03 |
Dally Randriantefy was the first qualifier to book a place into the first round of the main draw. Other players who qualified: Zuzana Ondraskova, Vanessa Henke and Virginie Razzano and Claudine Schaul, who got selected as a lucky loser.

Dally Randriantefy, who previously eliminated Zsofia Gubasci , post an easy victory past Luxembourg Schaul 6-4 and 6-2. Schaul, however, got selected to replace the injured Mauresmo in the main draw, since she was the highest ranked player who got eliminated in the qualifications.
German Vanessa Henke had little trouble erasing Sandra Kleinova. The Czech player made too many unforced errors end was sent packing with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat.
Virginie Razzano lived up to expectations by besting Ukrainian Elena Tatarkova 6-3, 6-0.
Zuzana Ondraskova outlasted Rita Kuti Kis in the last qualifying match of the day 7-5, 6-2.
